A song springs to mind when I think about Commodore, its by Four Non
Blondes and is called "WHATS GOING ON"! I think of this song because
nobody seems to know what IS going on with Commodore.
Take their recent revelations about their CD add on for the A1200,
first of all they were making one, then they weren't because it would
cost to much, then they weren't because it could not be made FMV
compatible, then they ARE making one but are only selling it in
Germany !?!
Commodore are known for there WorldWide cockups. It started out when
they released the VIC 20, this was quite honestly a crap machine for
its time, what with the Spectrum and such available. OK it had colour
graphics and nice sound but it was still a slow under developed
machine. then Commodore released the C64.....
This machine rewrote the history books, it was good, fast (for it's
time) colourful and had good sound effects, yet Commodore weren't
happy, so they brought out the C16 at about the same time as the C64.
The C16 was Black and sexy, and was twice as good as the VIC 20 but it
was only half as good as the C64. So why did Commodore bring out a
machine that was actually a step backwards from their new machine (the
C64)
This was cockup No. 1
Their next mistake was quite recent, and I'm sure we all remember the
A500+.
It was heralded by some Magazines as "The Amiga for the Business user"
I for one was tempted by the new Workbench and 1meg Chip memory!
Everything was going fine for the A500+ until Commodore mentioned the
A600! Everyone panicked at the arrival of this NEW SHAPED AMIGA with a
PCMCIA "Credit Card" slot.
So what did everyone do? They sold their A500's and A500+'s and bought
this excellent new machine!! Great Commodore seemed to be doing things
right!!
So quite why they decided to release the A1200 so soon after the A600
is totally beyond me! In the space of about 1 year Commodore went from
the A500 through the A500+ and A600 and then onto the A1200 AND in the
meantime they dropped the price of the A600 from 399 to 199 in the
space of ONE month.
Were YOU one of those people that bought an A600 one week only to find
it drop by 200 in the space of FOUR weeks from the day you bought it?
I know that if I had bought an A600 I would have been totally PI**ED
OFF with Commodore.
This was cock up No.2
Next (as mentioned earlier) is the CD32 add on for the A1200.
Everyone is waiting for this machine, but Commodore refuse to make
one. What is wrong with you Commodore? All you have to do to make a CD
add on for the A1200 is re-design the case for the CD32 and put a
connector on the motherboard to connect it to the A1200 and we'll ALL
be happy! I (if I hadn't bought a CD32 already) would pay the same
price for an add on CD drive as for the CD32! Even if this wasn't
possible, the only thing that seems to be stopping Commodore from
designing this new add on is the fact that they can't seem to make it
FMV compatible. I would most certainly buy a NON FMV compatible CD
drive as, if I wanted to play Flims from CD, I would buy the normal
CD32 and stick it in the Living Room next to the TV and Satallite
Receiver. My computer would stay upstairs in its room with the add on
firmly attached for playing games on, it would NOT find its way into
the Living Room everytime I wanted to watch a Film!
So come on Commodore give us what we want, (You seem to have given the
Germans what they want if the rumours are true) All computers should
have access to CD technology if they are to succeed in this Day and
Age.
This as we are well aware is cockup No.3
What is going to be the next one? Will we see an A1250+ with the
Triple "A" Chip set and 8 channel surround sound in the next
fortnight?
Who knows, one things for sure, Commodore had better start listening
to their income makers, US! If we didn't buy Commodore products, they
would die, it is as simple as that. I know its horrible to think
about, but I predict that in the next 10 years the AMIGA will be like
the Atari ST. Only this time we will be ALL upgrading to 486 PC's
with their excellent flight sims and proffesional business software.
I have only one thing to say to Commodore at this present time,
I said hey yey yey yey yeah, hey yey yeah, I said hey, Whats going on
